Apple rates every one of these at up to 10 hours of surfing the web on Wi-Fi, and lists every one as compatible with iPadOS 26. The oldest iPad here runs the same software as the newest.
The Pro tier
The Pro line is where ProMotion and Face ID live. Nothing else in this restock has either.
The iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation, M2) has the best screen of the nine. It is the only Liquid Retina XDR panel here, a mini-LED display with 2596 local dimming zones at 2732 by 2048, reaching 1000 nits sustained in XDR and 1600 nits peak for HDR. The M2 chip pairs an 8-core CPU with a 10-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, and the port is Thunderbolt and USB 4 at up to 40 Gb/s, so a drive or a display attaches directly. It supports Apple Pencil hover, which previews your mark before the tip touches the glass. Wi-Fi stock is Space Grey 256 GB from $949.99 and 512 GB at $999.99. The Wi-Fi + Cellular version starts at $949.99 for 128 GB, with 256 GB at $999.99 and 512 GB at $1,049.99. Buy it if you edit photo or video, illustrate, or want a canvas close to laptop size.
The iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation, M1) gives you most of that in a body you can hold in one hand. The M1 runs an 8-core CPU, an 8-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine with 8GB of memory, through the same Thunderbolt and USB 4 port. The display is 11-inch Liquid Retina, 2388 by 1668 at 600 nits, with ProMotion, but it is not the XDR panel of the big Pro. The rear cameras are a 12MP Wide and a 10MP Ultra Wide with a LiDAR scanner. In stock: Space Grey 128 GB from $599.99, Space Grey and Silver 256 GB at $649.99.
The iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) is the best value on this list, and the reason is simple. ProMotion and Face ID are still Pro-only features, and this is the cheapest way to get both. At $449.99 it undercuts the iPad Air 5 by $80, with a smoother display and face unlock the Air does not have at any price. The A12X Bionic chip drives an 11-inch Liquid Retina display, 2388 by 1668 at 264 ppi and 600 nits, fully laminated with an antireflective coating. It charges and connects over USB-C, takes the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or the Apple Pencil (USB-C), and weighs 468 g at 5.9 mm. The Air tier
The Air is the middle of the range. Both generations here share the same 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, 2360 by 1640 at 500 nits, Touch ID in the top button, USB-C, and support for the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or Apple Pencil (USB-C). No ProMotion, no Face ID. What changes between them is the chip, the front camera and the cellular radio.
The iPad Air (5th generation, M1) runs the same M1 chip as the 11-inch Pro above, with 8GB of memory. Its front camera is a 12MP Ultra Wide with Center Stage, which keeps you framed during a call, and its cellular models are 5G. One configuration is in stock, Blue 64 GB at $529.99.
The iPad Air (4th generation) uses the A14 Bionic, has a 7MP FaceTime HD front camera with no Center Stage, and is Gigabit-class LTE rather than 5G on cellular. On the Wi-Fi listing, Blue 256 GB is $429.99. The Wi-Fi + Cellular listing starts at $469.99 for Space Grey 64 GB, with Green 256 GB at $499.99. If you take a lot of video calls, pay the difference for the 5th generation. Otherwise the 4th generation is the better buy.
The mini tier
Both minis share an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, 2266 by 1488 at 326 ppi, the sharpest screen in this restock. Both weigh 293 g and use USB-C and Touch ID in the top button. Neither has a Smart Connector, so neither clips into a keyboard case. These are reading, note-taking and travel tablets, not laptop replacements.
The iPad mini (A17 Pro) is the newer of the two. Its A17 Pro chip has a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, with Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and a 12MP Center Stage front camera. The detail that matters: it takes the Apple Pencil Pro or the Apple Pencil (USB-C), not the Apple Pencil (2nd generation). Space Grey 128 GB is $629.99.
The iPad mini (6th generation) runs the A15 Bionic with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0, and it takes the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or the Apple Pencil (USB-C), not the Apple Pencil Pro. The two look nearly identical and take different pencils, so check which one you own before ordering. Space Grey 256 GB is $499.99.
The entry tier
These two are the cheapest way into iPadOS and the only Lightning devices in the restock. Both take the Apple Pencil (1st generation) and both have Touch ID in a Home button.
The iPad (9th generation) has a 10.2-inch Retina display at 2160 by 1620 and 500 nits, an A13 Bionic chip, an 8MP rear camera and a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Center Stage. It is the only iPad here with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and the only one on Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2. In stock: Space Grey 64 GB at $399.99, with unlocked cellular included at that price.
The iPad Air (3rd generation, 10.5-inch) is older but better made. Its 10.5-inch Retina display runs 2224 by 1668 at 500 nits, fully laminated with an antireflective coating rated at 1.8% reflectivity, which the iPad 9 is not. That means less glare and no visible gap under the glass when you write on it. The A12 Bionic is a generation behind the iPad 9, and the cameras are 8MP rear and 7MP front. Gold 256 GB is $299.99 on the Wi-Fi listing, and the Wi-Fi + Cellular listing starts at $279.99 for Space Grey 64 GB, with 256 GB at $299.99.
How to choose
How big do you want the screen? The 12.9-inch Pro is a desk and lap device, the one to buy if you want a working canvas. The 10.9-inch and 11-inch models are the middle ground most people land on. At 8.3 inches, either mini fits in a jacket pocket.
Do you draw or write with a Pencil? Buy a model that takes the Apple Pencil (2nd generation) or later, which charges magnetically on the side instead of plugging into the bottom. That rules out the iPad 9 and the Air 3. The cheapest entry is the iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) at $449.99, and ProMotion makes the pen feel more responsive than anything in the Air or mini tiers.
Do you need cellular? Four models have a Wi-Fi + Cellular listing in stock: the 12.9-inch Pro, the Air 4, the Air 3 and the iPad 9. The cheapest way in is the Air 3 Wi-Fi + Cellular from $279.99, and the iPad 9 at $399.99 adds a newer chip and a Center Stage front camera.
What is your budget? Under $350, take the Air 3. Between $450 and $530, the iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation) beats everything at the price. Around $600, the iPad Pro 11-inch (3rd generation, M1) adds Thunderbolt and a much faster chip. Above $900, the 12.9-inch M2 is the only one with the XDR display.
